Northern Home Improvement partnered with Ingham County LandBank this winter/spring to completely gut and remodel two homes located in Lansing. These homes are part of the Neighborhood Stabilization program. These homes are completely remodeled, brought up to code, and made energy efficient then sold to qualifying families. Many of the newly remodeled homes you see in the city of Lansing currently are part of this program.

This particular home we took the house down to bare studs and re-built it from there. Everything you see, vinyl siding, asphalt shingles, bathroom remodel, kitchen remodel, tile and wood flooring, vinyl windows, entry doors, etc are all new. The finished attic bedroom consists of sloped ceilings and dormers to add light into the room. With built-in shelving and a closet this attic remodel took a usually forgotten space and turned it into a large bedroom.

  • Dormers

Adding a dormer to home is a great way to make a once wasted space into usable space. This home in St. Johns decided to re-structure their roof to include a new covered porch as well as two dormers. The new roof over the front porch created new Cape Cod look. We re-designed the stair locations to give it a better flow and re-use the existing rails. The two dormers in the second story enlarged the existing rooms and brought in more light. The Owens Corning asphalt shingles are from the Designer Collection and feature a lifetime warranty.

Generally when a roof is replaced, it is because it has begun to leak or there is some other type of damage; then there are times that people update the roof for a fresher look and to avoid those leaks.  This family was looking to freshen up their home’s exterior as well as prevent from any leaks happening.  The Designer Collection shingles they chose from Owens Corning really brought out the red in their trim and brick and gave the house a new look.

This home is an example of when a roof needs to be replaced.  This home was listed for sale and every person that looked at it mentioned that it would need a new roof.  The sellers contacted us to do the roof.  We did a complete tear-off down to the OSB decking and installed new roofing to code.  The roof features a classic Owens Corning asphalt shingle.

For true durability and longevity, consider a metal roof.  While you may pay more upfront, it will outlive an asphalt shingle.  This family wanted a completely new look for their home.  The entire exterior of the home was covered in a vinyl siding.  The front of the home and garage, and the side of the garage were covered in a vinyl shake.  The deck on the back and side also saw a facelift with replacing the wood with new wolmanized lumber.  The side deck also features a newly constructed roof.  What was once a shed roof is now a dramatic gabled roof with shake siding.  We re-constructed the existing garage to make it a two car garage with a new slope.  The entire home and garage are finished with a forest green metal roof.

This farmhouse got a completely new look with new siding, deck, and most importantly a completely new roof structure. This family wanted to have a porch that went around the entire side of the house and wrapped around the front of the house. On the rear of the house we added a gazebo style end. In order to make the roof on the porch work we had to completely re-construct the roof over the lower portion of the home to create a new slope. We then constructed a new porch and roof around the side of the home. The decking is a natural color composite decking material with a white vinyl lattice, and a white vinyl rail system. The porch features a vinyl ceiling panel to give it a farm house bead board look. The roof is covered in an Owens Corning asphalt shingle.
